Spousal, Common-Law, and Conjugal Sponsorships

Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner under the Canadian family reunification program, provided they meet certain eligibility requirements.

Depending on the circumstances, applications fall under:

  • Overseas Sponsorship Processed outside of Canada.
  • Inland Sponsorship For applicants already in Canada. Those applying inland may be eligible for a Spousal Open Work Permit, allowing them to work while waiting for their application to be processed.

While there is no minimum income requirement for sponsoring a spouse or dependent child, the sponsor must demonstrate financial capacity to support their partner once they become a permanent resident of Canada.

Sponsor Your Parent/Grandparent

Canada’s Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program (PGP) operates through a lottery system. Each year, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) allows eligible sponsors to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to sponsor their parents or grandparents.

If selected, sponsors must meet strict financial eligibility criteria, including a Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) based on family size. The required income is updated annually.

Sponsor Another Relative (Lonely Canadian Program)

Canadian citizens or permanent residents may be eligible to sponsor a relative under the "Lonely Canadian" program if they do not have a spouse, child, parent, or grandparent they could sponsor. The sponsor must reside in Canada and meet financial and eligibility requirements.
